X96 Bash
The X96 BASH (Big Ass Show) bands have been announced. The line up now includes the following:
It seems that they are all "punk" type bands (predominantly). I don't know if that's just the preference of the station or if these are the only people that like to play for not much. I am guessing that The Used are coming because they like x96 a lot, but that is just a guess.
Maybe Todd Nuke 'em could enlighten us to the choices of the bands.
Don't forget - Tickets go on sale this Friday (August 12, 2005) for $9.60 (with free loader card) at Airwaves
-- Continued (Due to miscommunication)
This is why I want to know why they chose the bands - I see a commonality of the genre, but I have no idea how one would go about picking a line up for what may be one of the largest concerts in Utah (I also like the date that you picked, better than the super hot Warped Tour).
I personally like most of the bands picked (I say most because I do not know them all). I believe that it will be well worth the small fee (I would be willing to pay up to $40 typically for a ticket to a concert for one band, this is an awesome way to do something like this).
I applaud Todd for the choices that he made, my original intentions of this post was to know how one would go about picking these bands (is it safe to say it's just a lot of phone calls, as said in a post). Or is it also picking most of what people would like to hear, as I am sure there are a lot of people that would be willing to come for the fee, but would the fans want to see that.
I hope that this can clear up some of the what I believe was a miscommunication in the first part of my post, and apologize if I came across as disappointed.
The Used, Our Lady Peace, Story of the Year, The Bravery, MXPX, Cold, Rise Against, 30 Seconds to Mars, All American Rejects, Hawthorne Heights, Hot Hot Heat, and Kasabian.

You work 11 hours a day for months asking every band you can think of.
Most of them want more than $100,000 to play a show.
Jesus Christ, what did you want? Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers for $20????

No Todd I was just curious to the pick of the bands. I like the bands.
I was curious if these were the bands that were willing to do it for not a lot of money (which I admire), or if that is just the way that the industry is moving towards (which it is predominantly, in the non-rap area that is).
It's sad that when most bands get famous they demand and expect more than they may deserve.
I do not mean to say that "This is the best they could get?" or anything like that. I was curious how you decide to which bands, and it sounds that you just try to get as much as you can.

Darren,
You know I love you.
The process is quite a task, but I'll give you a rundown of the phases of it.
1. We set the date. Late September usually works because bands are usually not hitting the big multi-day festivals in Europe and the Warped Tour is finished. This frees up a good selection of bands.
2. We communicate with managers and record company reps to find out which bands have new material slated to come out in August/September. This usually means that bands are "working" as in touring.
3. I start making offers to bands to play our show. Some want tons of money, which we have to decline in order to keep tickets affordable.
4. It falls together after tons of emails and phone calls with managers and record label reps. Usually it's up-and-coming bands who realize the value of performing in front of 15,000 people instead of 600 at a club.
Some managers and bands are easier to work with than others. The manager for The Used and Story of the Year is cool, as is the company that manages The Bravery.
We try to get a diverse sound for the show. I didn't think it was fair to call them all punk, because The Bravery, Kasabian, Hot Hot Heat, and Our Lady Peace don't fit that title.
It should be fun this year!
Again Darren, you're my favorite neighbor in the whole hood.

Sweet deal, thanks for taking the time to give me a run down, I'm sure others will be very interested in how that works.

I can't say that I like any of these bands that much. Oh well. You say tomato, I say generic-bands-that-do-nothing-for-me.
Sigh.

So everyone seems to be complaining about the line up. But I simply love it! Good job I am super excited!
